O gato Persa ficou ainda mais conhecido quando a Rainha Vitória teve seu primeiro exemplar.
Padrão da raça
O Persa deve possuir o corpo maciço, compacto e robusto, tendo ossatura forte, patas grossas e curtas e sua cauda também deve ser curta. Enquanto a pelagem deve ser longa, abundante e densa em todo o corpo e devem apresentar um colar de pelos ao redor do pescoço, sendo que precisam ser mais longos e volumosos até o peito.
Sua cabeça deve ser ampla e arredondada, com bochechas cheias e nariz curto, que deve ser posicionado entre os seus olhos grandes e distantes um do outro, fazendo lembrar uma coruja. Enquanto as orelhas devem ser curtas, espaçadas e arredondadas.
Este é o padrão que foi estabelecido internacionalmente para a raça. Porém, eles recebem três classificações diferentes, sendo elas:
- Show ou Exposição: Persas que possuem todos os padrões da raça podem ir para exposições para passar por avaliação dos juízes;
- Breeder: Gatos que são próximos ao padrão. Serão importantes para criação ou podem ir para a exposição, porém, não ganharão a melhor posição. Possuem alguma característica indesejada como: posicionamento de olhos ou focinho errado ou leve prognatismo;
- Pet: são Persas que fogem do padrão, mas que possuem pedigree. Eles têm faltas desqualificantes, mas ainda assim conseguem o pedigree, mas não são gatos reprodutores, e é importante a castração para não passarem características indesejadas.

Eles possuem uma variedade grande de cores de pelos, porém, as mais encontradas são: chocolate, vermelho, creme, preto, branco, lilás e azul, sendo estas cores sólidas. O Gato Persa possui outros dois tipos de cor de pelagem, as bicolores e até mesmo tricolores quando são fêmeas.
